Our anniversary

Six years ago, we chose commitment.
Two children of divorce, one leap
of well-considered faith in each other
and God. Our vows were promises
to do it differently, stay yoked
in our hearts and our bodies
no matter what comes at us.

Some days it's a charmed life
full of laughter and unexpected joy;
others we pace in separate corners
fighting the urge to pounce, destroy,
arise victorious from petty slights grown
into monsters on our tired shoulders.

Marriage is hard, dirty, exhausting work
but it has brought an emotional
and spiritual growth I couldn't fathom
when viewing it from the outside.
Children of divorce can't carry faith
in the institution and idea of marriage,
that bond that broke a family
once already in our short lives.

Yet growing together in this marriage
has taught me to keep trying,
to forgive, look deeper, and trust
that our commitment to each other
is a strong and precious truth.

Thank you for giving me that,
and for these six years together.

Happy Anniversary! Will you celebrate with Sour Patch Kids, grape tomatoes, and a family dance party perhaps? =>

Close. Chinese takeout, Harry Potter, and someone else doing the dishes. Okay, maybe not very close at all.

We're taking a road trip to deliver relief supplies to Georgia and Alabama next weekend and then doing our annual kid-free retreat the weekend after that, so this weekend will be very low key.

Wow, Kelly. This is so beautiful. So real.

Beautiful! I felt the part about pacing in separate corners, those monsters grow to fast and learning to put our fury in it's place to keep what's best, well. Sigh.

But, I like the challenge and the requirement to see beyond myself.

Congratulations on six years! I'm touched and inspired by your commitment to marriage, with both of you being children of divorce. It is very wise to recognize the hurtle you have in front of you. But, I believe in you!!

Happy (now belated) anniversary to you, Kelly!

One stanza of your poem stopped me in my tracks: "Some days it's a charmed life
    full of laughter and unexpected joy;
others we pace in separate corners
fighting the urge to pounce, destroy,
arise victorious from petty slights grown
into monsters on our tired shoulders."

Since our third was born, I fear my husband and I have been forgetting the first part and doing more of the second. But your beautiful post is a good reminder to try to focus more on the laughter and joy.

    Thank you for that.

gorgeous and true. love every word. congrats and many more beautiful years of love and laughter.

This is so, so lovely, Kelly. These two words: "stay yoked." There is imagery there. Tied together, carrying each other through life, walking in step, hand in hand. Yeah, something like that.

And yes to what Kristen said and the stanza she referenced. Those words are incredible. Marriage is the hardest. I think it's harder to be a wife most days than a mother--for me. The rewards are great, though, and the love grows deeper over time and changes us, and it is truly a gift to find someone to share your life with and push through it all with.

    Happy Happy Six Years.
